Kane reaches
500 goals
DETROIT (AP) — Patrick Kane became the 50th player in NHL history to reach 500 goals, scoring his second goal of the game into an empty net with 3:53 left to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 on Thursday night.
The 37-year-old Kane is the fifth U.S.-born player to reach the milestone, following Mike Modano (561), Keith Tkachuk (538), Jeremy Roenick (513) and Joe Mullen (502). Brett Hull, a dual citizen who was born in Canada and played internationally for the United States, had 741 goals.
Kane opened the scoring on a two-man advantage with 29 seconds left in the first period. Kane has 1,369 points, five behind Modano for the U.S.-born mark.

Justice Haynes
to transfer
(AP) — Big Ten rushing leader Justice Haynes is transferring again after an injury-shortened single season at Michigan.
Haynes, who played his first two college seasons at Alabama, announced on social media Friday that he planned “to return for another year of college football and enter the transfer portal.”
Haynes ran for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns, with more than 100 yards in six of his seven games during his only season with the Wolverines. He missed their last five games because of a right foot injury, but still qualified as the Big Ten leader with 122.4 yards per game and 7.1 yards per carry.
The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder from Alpharetta, Georgia, ran for 616 yards and nine touchdowns in 25 games for Alabama in 2023 and 2024. He started six games as a sophomore before transferring to Michigan.
Skubal seeks
$32 million
NEW YORK (AP) — Two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal asked for a record $32 million in salary arbitration while the Detroit Tigers offered the left-hander $19 million. Skubal was the most prominent of the 18 players who swapped figures with their teams. Those without agreements face hearings before three-person panels from Jan. 26 to Feb. 13.
A two-time All-Star, the 29-year-old Skubal will be eligible for free agency after the World Series. He is 54-37 with a 3.08 ERA in six major league seasons.
Seattle outfielder Randy Arozarena was among 148 players reaching deals, agreeing at $15.65 million.
Jon-Eric Sullivan
to lead Dolphons
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Jon-Eric Sullivan has agreed join the Miami Dolphins as their general manager. The former Green Bay Packers executive is the first key piece in Miami’s organizational reboot. Sullivan was previously the Packers’ vice president of player personnel. He completed an in-person interview this week with the Dolphins.
Miami was expected to move swiftly in hiring a new general manager after parting ways with longtime GM Chris Grier during the season. Sullivan’s first major task will be hiring a head coach after Mike McDaniel was fired Thursday.
Diggs might
get a start
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Trevon Diggs couldn’t have imagined a couple of weeks ago that he’d have a chance to make an impact in the playoffs. The 27-year-old cornerback finds himself in this improbable position after the Green Bay Packers claimed him off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys last week.
Diggs performed capably while playing nearly half of Green Bay’s defensive snaps in its regular-season finale Sunday. Packers coach Matt LaFleur didn’t rule out the possibility of starting him in tonight’s wild-card matchup at Chicago.
MSU beats
Northwestern
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Carson Cooper had 18 points and nine rebounds, and Jeremy Fears Jr. scored all of his 15 points in the second half to help No. 12 Michigan State come back to beat Northwestern 76-66 on Thursday.
Jaxon Kohler added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans, who trailed by seven at halftime and eight in the second half before rallying to win for the sixth time in seven games.
Trae Young
goes to Wizards
WASHINGTON (AP) — Trae Young was introduced to the home crowd with a video during the first quarter of Washington’s game against New Orleans. Earlier in the day Friday, the trade that sent the high-scoring guard from Atlanta to the Wizards became official.
Now Young can look forward to a fresh start after leaving the Hawks. The first big question is when Young will play again. He missed Friday night’s game with knee and quadriceps issues and hasn’t appeared in a game since Dec. 27.
Max Kepler
suspended
NEW YORK (AP) — Free agent outfielder Max Kepler has been suspended for 80 games following a positive test for a banned performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s drug program. Kepler tested positive for Epitrenbolone, a substance that led to a suspension in 2018 for boxer Manuel Charr.
An 11-year major league veteran, Kepler spent last season with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played his first 10 seasons with the Minnesota Twins.
