Shiffrin
places 4th
CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin extended her Olympic slump with a fourth-place finish in the new team combined event after partner Breezy Johnson led the opening downhill leg. Shiffrin is the most successful World Cup racer of all time with a record 108 victories overall and 71 in slalom but she has now gone seven straight Olympic races without a medal.
After taking two golds and a silver from her first two Olympics, Shiffrin didn’t win a medal in six races at the 2022 Beijing Games. On Tuesday, Shiffrin lost time at every checkpoint and crossed 0.31 seconds behind to miss a medal by 0.06. Ariane Raedler and Katharina Huber of Austria won gold.
Siblings win
mixed doubles
CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Isabella and Rasmus Wranå, Sweden’s first team of siblings at the Winter Olympics, won gold in mixed doubles curling by beating U.S. pair Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin.A two-point play by Isabella off the final rock of a tight match sealed a 6-5 win for the Swedish duo, who used to be rival players and now are Olympic champions together.
The Americans won a first medal in Olympic mixed doubles, and Thiesse became the first American woman to capture a medal in curling.
Malinin is
nearly perfect
MILAN (AP) — Ilia Malinin has silenced any doubters of the self-styled “Quad God.” The American wunderkind threw down a near-perfect short program filled with high-flying jumps and a jaw-dropping backflip to take a big lead at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
The two-time reigning world champion was rewarded with 108.16 points for his program. Yuma Kagiyama of Japan was second with 103.07 points, but that five-point difference going into the free skate is enormous given the huge technical advantage Malinin has over a longer program.
Adam Siao Him Fa of France, the last skater to beat Malinin more than two years ago, was third with 102.55 points.
Super viewing
short of record
(AP) — Seattle’s Super Bowl victory over New England on Sunday night didn’t break viewership records. The game averaged 124.9 million viewers across NBC, Peacock, Telemundo, NBC Sports Digital, and NFL+, according to Nielsen. This is less than the 127.7 million who watched Philadelphia beat Kansas City last year.
Bad Bunny’s halftime show also fell short of records. It averaged 128.2 million viewers, making it the fourth-most watched halftime show. Kendrick Lamar, Michael Jackson, and Usher hold the top three spots. Global viewership numbers for the halftime show are expected next week.
Maye plans
no surgery
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye doesn’t plan to have any surgical procedures on his throwing shoulder after receiving a pain-relieving injection before the Super Bowl. Despite the long playoff run, Maye doesn’t think he put any extra stress on this arm this season.
He believes an extra hit in the AFC title game likely triggered the soreness that led to the pain injection. Left tackle Will Campbell revealed that a torn ligament in his knee sent him to injured reserve for four games late in the regular season. But he said he was healthy enough to play in the playoffs. Coach Mike Vrabel said there’s no plans to shift Campbell to another position.
