Spartans

rout Bruins

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Jeremy Fears Jr. had 16 points and 10 assists, leading No. 15 Michigan State to an 82-59 victory over UCLA on Tuesday night.

The Spartans (21-5, 11-4 Big Ten) bounced back with a strong performance after losing three of four games and falling five spots in the AP Top 25 this week.

The Bruins (17-9, 9-6) have lost two straight games after winning five of six.

The Spartans were 8 of 14 from beyond the arc in the opening period and finished with a season-high 14 3-pointers on 27 attempts.

Michigan State hosts Ohio State on Sunday.

Alysa Liu

contends

MILAN (AP) — Alysa Liu chases an Olympic medal in women’s figure skating and tries to end a long U.S. drought. On Tuesday night, she skated a near-perfect short program and scored 76.59 points.

She sits just behind Japan’s Ami Nakai and Kaori Sakamoto going into the free skate tonight. The U.S. has not won Olympic gold in the event since 2002. Liu says she does not focus on beating anyone. Instead, she focuses on skating her story.

She has returned strong after a two-year retirement and a break from burnout, winning the first world title by an American last year since Kimmie Meissner in 2006.

Badgers fall

go Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Bruce Thornton scored 27 points and Devin Royal added 25 for Ohio State as the Buckeyes knocked off No. 24 Wisconsin 86-69 Tuesday night.

Ohio State (17-9, 9-6 Big Ten) beat a ranked team for the first time in seven tries this season.

Braeden Carrington made five 3-pointers in the second half and led the Badgers with 20 points.

Wisconsin hosts Iowa on Sunday.

Duke awaits

Michigan

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — No. 1 Michigan stuck to the game plan Tuesday night.

The Wolverines ignored their ranking, the fact they were playing their first game in 13 years as the nation’s highest-ranked team or the distraction of looking ahead to Saturday’s long-awaited showdown against No. 3 Duke.

Instead, they took care of business at No. 7 Purdue, winning 91-80.

“This is great for our fans, it’s great for recruiting, great for the attention it puts on our program and our prestigious university,” coach Dusty May said. “But as far as do we care (about being No. 1)? Absolutely not. If we’re No. 1 on April 7, that’s what we’re ultimately concerned with.”
