Johnson named
all-region
DE PERE, Wis. – St. Norbert College had seven track and field student-athletes named all-region selections by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The honorees included freshman Kamdan Johnson of Florence, Wis., who set set a school record with the first-ever sub-9 seconds performance in the 60-meter hurdles at the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference championships. Johnson’s time was a conference-record 8.97 seconds.
Cunningham
injured in win
WASHINGTON (AP) — Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham, a two-time All-Star who is among the leaders in the NBA MVP race, left Tuesday night’s game against the Washington Wizards with back spasms.
Cunningham was injured early in the first quarter while diving for a loose ball and colliding with Wizards guard Tre Johnson. The 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick took a while to get up but played for a few more minutes before being taken out at the 6:40 mark.
The team said during the second quarter he would not return. After the game, which Detroit won 130-117 for Washington’s 13th straight loss, Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff gave no update about the injury.
“I don’t have enough information,” he said. “It’s one of those things that unfortunately we’ve dealt with a lot this season and had to call on different guys throughout the year.”
McIlroy
sets menu
(AP) — Rory McIlroy has spared no detail — or no expense — for his menu at the Masters Club dinner. The defending Masters champion is the host of the dinner on Tuesday night at Augusta National. He also selects the menu and picks up the tab.
It’s a tradition that dates to 1952. McIlroy has a few items from his home in Northern Ireland, including Traditional Irish Champ potatoes and stuffed dates wrapped with bacon. He also went local with Georgia-grown Vidalia onion rings and peach and ricotta flatbread. He’s keen on the yellowfin tuna carpaccio. That’s from his favorite restaurant in New York.
Gerrit Cole
pitches again
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Gerrit Cole has returned to a mound to pitch in a game after a 377-day absence and threw a scoreless first inning for the New York Yankees in an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox. Cole threw 10 pitches, seven for strikes, including six four-seam fastballs that averaged 97.1 mph.
He threw two sliders and a pair of knuckle-curves. A 35-year-old right-hander, Cole had Tommy John surgery on March 11 last year with Los Angeles Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
His last official outing was in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series that Oct. 30. The six-time All-Star pitched in two spring training games in 2025, the last on March 6.
South Carolina
looks to rebound
(AP) — South Carolina coach Dawn Staley is treating a 17-point loss to Texas as a useful reset before the NCAA Tournament. Her fourth-ranked Gamecocks lost the SEC title game 78-61 to Texas after a 14-0 first-quarter hole.
A similar loss in the SEC titgle game 2022 ended with a national championship. South Carolina will be the No. 1 seed again and will face the winner of Southern and Samford on Saturday. The Gamecocks have made the Final Four as a No. 1 seed the last five seasons.
