Red Wings
fall to Wild
DETROIT (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov completed the sixth hat trick of his NHL career on the power play with 1:51 remaining to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.
The Wild led 4-1 before allowing Detroit to score three times in the third period and tie it. A penalty on Patrick Kane paved the way for Kaprizov to score his third goal of the game.
The Red Wings led the Atlantic Division and were tied for the most points in the Eastern Conference the morning of Jan. 25, with a 12-point playoff cushion. They’ve lost 12 of 20 games since to fall out of a spot with five left to play.
Islanders
fire Roy
NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Roy has been fired as coach of the New York Islanders. First-year general manager Mathieu Darche announced the abrupt decision Sunday after the team lost four in a row and seven of its past 10 games.
The Islanders were comfortably in a playoff spot until this late-season tailspin put their chances in danger with four games left to play. Peter DeBoer was named as Roy’s replacement and not just on an interim basis. He has taken two teams to the Stanley Cup Final and most recently coached the Dallas Stars to three consecutive trips to the Western Conference final before being fired last spring following their latest exit.
Spaun claims
Texas Open
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — J.J. Spaun delivered two crucial shots to secure a win at the Valero Texas Open. He finished with a 5-under 67, marking his first title since last summer’s U.S. Open.
Spaun’s victory at TPC San Antonio was his second, but unlike four years ago, he already has a spot at Augusta National. This win was significant as he hadn’t finished in the top 20 in seven starts this year.
Robert MacIntyre led much of the tournament but finished second. Spaun’s birdie and eagle on the 16th and 17th holes were key to his victory.

Family shifts
allegiance
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Even though he hails from a state where Peyton Manning ruled the sports world, the Fab Five and Tom Brady turned Indiana native Josh Mullins into a dedicated Michigan fan. Just how big of a Wolverines fan? He named his oldest son after star Michigan receiver Braylon Edwards.
Now, UConn’s breakout star, Braylon Mullins, will try to take down the family’s favorite program with the national title on the line Monday night. But dad says he’ll be rooting for UConn all the way when the Huskies take on the Wolverines.
Cubs split
doubleheader
CLEVELAND (AP) — CJ Kayfus homered and Gabriel Arias hit an RBI single in the eighth inning as the Cleveland Guardians rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 and split a doubleheader Sunday.
Shut out 1-0 in the opener, the Guardians were six outs from being swept when Kayfus, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth, homered off Jacob Webb (0-1) to tie it at 4.
Rookie Chase DeLauter followed with a single and Rhys Hoskins walked before Arias delivered his second run-scoring single of Game 2. Austin Hedges singled in a run to put Cleveland up 6-4.
Despite getting just two hits, the Cubs won the opener 1-0 as starter Edward Cabrera and three relievers combined on a one-hitter.
