Diamondbacks
MILWAUKEE (AP) — William Contreras went 4 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs as the Milwaukee Brewers overcame Brandon Woodruff’s early exit and trounced the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-1 on Thursday.
The Brewers took two of three from Arizona to cap a 3-3 homestand.
Woodruff had a 1-0 count on Nolan Arenado when he left with one out in the second inning. The two-time All-Star didn’t exceed 86.9 mph on any of his 21 pitches, and his average fastball velocity was 85.4 mph.
Contreras delivered an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third. He hit an RBI single in the fourth, walked in the sixth and singled again in the eighth.
Sal Frelick homered and Tyler Black and Luis Rengifo had three RBIs apiece for the Brewers. Contreras and Garrett Mitchell each scored three runs.
Woodruff was undergoing tests Thursday.
Bucks hire
Jenkins
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Taylor Jenkins is the Milwaukee Bucks’ new coach. The former Memphis Grizzlies coach takes over a Bucks team coming off a 50-loss season that snapped a string of nine straight playoff appearances.
The Bucks’ Thursday announcement of this hire comes a week after reports surfaced that the two sides were finalizing an agreement. Doc Rivers had stepped down as the Bucks’ coach the day after they completed their 32-50 season.
Jenkins coached the Grizzlies from 2019-25 and posted a 250-214 record that included three straight playoff appearances from 2021-23.
Tigers avoid
a sweep
ATLANTA (AP) — Detroit manager A.J. Hinch gave Kyle Finnegan the ball in a save situation in the ninth inning instead of closer Kenley Jansen against the Atlanta Braves in a move that could signal changes at the back end of the Tigers’ bullpen.
The decision came after Jansen’s third blown save in nine chances in Wednesday night’s 4-2 loss to the Braves as he gave up a two-run homer to Matt Olson.
One day after Jansen’s blown save opportunity, Finnegan came through for his first save in the Tigers’ 5-2 come-from-behind win over Atlanta to avoid a series sweep.
Iran will
participate
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — FIFA President Gianni Infantino opened his address at the FIFA Congress by affirming that Iran will participate in the World Cup and that the team will play in the United States despite the conflict between the two nations.
In an indication of how fraught the situation is with Iran’s participation in the tournament, representatives from the Iranian soccer federation were denied entry into Canada this week. Infantino also addressed ticket prices while Canadian officials basked in their role as hosts of the World Cup alongside the United States and Mexico.
The World Cup starts on June 11 and the final is scheduled for July 19.
Cardinals
defeat Skenes
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have been able to do what most other major league teams have not: beat Pirates ace Paul Skenes consistently.
The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner fell to 0-5 all-time against the Cardinals when he took the loss in a 10-5 defeat that gave St. Louis a four-game sweep of the early-season series at PNC Park.
Skenes’ ERA against St. Louis is a more than respectable 2.95, but Pirates manager Don Kelly noted the Cardinals are more focused on swinging away than trying to work the count against Skenes. Pittsburgh’s fifth straight loss dropped the Pirates to 16-16 as May begins.
Fulleffort
scratched
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Fulleffort was scratched from Saturday’s Kentucky Derby because of a chip in his left hind ankle, the latest departure from the field of 20 horses roughly 24 hours after Silent Tactic was ruled out.
Race officials announced the change Thursday, and trainer Brad Cox told The Associated Press that Fulleffort will undergo surgery and is expected to recover and return to racing. Cox said an X-ray revealed fluid in the ankle and called it an easy decision because Fulleffort showed some lameness.
Fullefort’s exit means jockey Tyler Gaffalione will have to wait for another chance to win the race for the first time. Cox went into the week with three Derby horses and is now down to two: Commandment and Further Ado.
With Fulleffort out, Ocelli draws in off the also-entered list.
Ocelli follows Great White into the field, who got in Wednesday when Silent Tactic was scratched because of a foot injury.
