Russia-Ukraine
in semifinals
PARIS (AP) — Marta Kostyuk, the top clay player this season and a strong supporter of Ukraine, has reached her first major semifinal at the French Open. She defeated fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in a three-set fight.
Kostyuk is the first Ukrainian woman to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros in the professional era. She faces Russian Mirra Andreeva next. The war between Ukraine and Russia adds tension to the matchup.
Vegas faces
Carolina
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — From their inception, the Vegas Golden Knights have been aggressive, pillaging the rest of the NHL during the expansion draft and making one big move after another to assemble the most talented roster money can buy in a salary-cap system.
The Carolina Hurricanes have been far more careful, not just in terms of spending but to draft and acquire players who fit into coach Rod Brind’Amour’s system.
Each team flies in the face of conventional roster building, but one will see its method lead to hoisting the Stanley Cup this spring.
Garrett
goes to Rams
(AP) — The Cleveland Browns traded two-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster deal. The Browns will acquire pass rusher and linebacker Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round selection, a second-round pick in 2028 and a 2029 third-round selection.
Garrett is expected to report to the Rams’ facility on Tuesday and have a news conference to discuss the trade. Garrett was not seen at the Browns’ facility during offseason workouts.
Coach Todd Monken said two weeks ago he had not had a face-to-face meeting with Garrett since being hired in late January.
Spurs, Knicks
new to finals
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — For a few hours on Tuesday, the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks held practices on a floor that had the NBA Finals logo painted at midcourt. They did interviews with the logo as a backdrop. They saw finals mentions basically everywhere they looked.
It might have seemed normal. It wasn’t. This stage — the NBA Finals — is new to just about everyone on the Spurs and Knicks rosters, meaning very few players on either side can have any real idea of how the moment will seem tonight when the 80th title series in league history gets underway in San Antonio.
Turang breaks
his slump
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brice Turang ended an 0-for-21 slump by going 2 for 2 with a double and triple in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 16-2 blowout of the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
Turang also had a pair of walks to reach on all four of his plate appearances. He doubled in the first inning and hit a two-run triple off the center-field wall in the second.
Milwaukee’s 16 runs and 18 hits were season highs. Christian Yelich and David Hamilton each went 3 for 5 with three runs for the Brewers. Luis Rengifo also scored three runs.
