MLB issues
still arising
NEW YORK (AP) -- Baseball players proposed expanding eligibility for the amateur draft rather than decreasing it, maintaining 20 rounds of selections and moving it back to June.
It’s another proposal indicating the sport is heading to a labor confrontation this offseason. During a bargaining session Tuesday, the union proposed allowing college sophomores to be eligible for the draft along with those finishing their junior years, who are eligible for the draft under the current rules along with high school seniors.
Major League Baseball said last month it wanted to eliminate eligibility for high school seniors and junior college players. It also proposed cutting the draft to 12 rounds in 2027.
Brooks stays
with Dolphins
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) -- Jordyn Brooks has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Miami Dolphins, ensuring the veteran linebacker remains a core piece of the team’s rebuild.
That’s according to a person familiar with the deal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t made an announcement. ESPN first reported the deal, which said it is worth $51.3 million with $35 million guaranteed. Brooks was an All-Pro last season after leading the NFL with 183 tackles.
Miami has also reached long-term deals with Aaron Brewer and De’Von Achane this offseason.
Women’s World
Cup ahead
(AP) -- It’s the women’s turn now. The next World Cup, the women’s edition, is set for next summer in Brazil.
Just as Spain won the men’s trophy on Sunday, that nation’s women were the champions three years ago. Currently the top-ranked women’s team in the world, Spain topped England 1-0 in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final in Sydney.
The memories of 2023 aren’t so sweet for the United States, which was knocked out of the tournament in the round of 16 by Sweden. Still, the U.S. has won four World Cup titles and is currently ranked No. 2 in the world.
