Lions sign
Devin White
DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Lions signed free-agent linebacker Devin White on Saturday.
The Lions announced the signing on their X account, but provided no details of the deal.
The 28-year-old White recorded a career-high 174 tackles for the Las Vegas Raiders last season. White, a first-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2019, was a Pro Bowl selection for the Buccaneers in 2021. White played five seasons for Tampa Bay before playing for Houston in 2024 and then enjoying the career revival with the Raiders.
White has started in 93 of 100 career games in seven seasons. He started all 17 games for the Raiders last season and his 174 tackles ranked third in the NFL. He added 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one interception.
Pochettino
remains coach
(AP) -- Mauricio Pochettino is staying with the U.S. soccer team, agreeing to a four-year contract to coach the Americans through the 2030 World Cup.
The 54-year-old Pochettino took over the national team in October 2024. He led the U.S. to the round of 16 at this year’s World Cup, where the tournament co-hosts were eliminated in a 4-1 loss to Belgium.
He still helped the seeded U.S. team to a pair of firsts in the expanded 48-nation tournament, clinching advancement from the group stage with a game to spare and winning three games in a single World Cup.
Harper moves
to right field
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Bryce Harper is now the Philadelphia Phillies right fielder after team president Dave Dombrowski swung a deal for three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants.
Arraez is the proven bat Philadelphia’s lineup needed in its chase for a fifth straight trip to the playoffs and first World Series championship since 2008. Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said Arraez will play second base, triggering a defensive shuffle that switched up the corner positions.
Bryson Stott will move from second base to third, and third baseman Alec Bohm will shift to first, where Harper has played since returning from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in 2023.
Notre Dame
schedules USC
(AP) -- Notre Dame and Southern California have announced that their college football rivalry will resume in 2030. The schools agreed to a four-game home-and-home series.
Notre Dame will play in Los Angeles on August 31, 2030, and USC will visit South Bend, Indiana, on August 30, 2031. The series is known as the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football.
The rivalry began in 1926 and Notre Dame leads the series 53-38-5. Both schools have a rich history. They have combined for 22 national championships and 15 Heisman Trophy winners.
