Hunter Henry
ends limbo
BOSTON (AP) -- One of Patriots quarterback Drake Maye’s favorite offensive targets isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Tight end Hunter Henry has signed a two-year extension to remain in New England through the 2027 season.
ESPN and the NFL Network reported that the extended pact has a base value of $16 million with incentives that could push it up to $20 million.
It ends a period of limbo for Henry, who was about to enter the final season of the previous three-year extension he signed in 2024.
FIFA chief
under fire
(AP) -- UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC believe that FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s recent plan to sell an interest in the World Cup was a “fundamental breach of trust” with the institutions world soccer’s governing body serves.
In an “open letter to the football family” UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC also say that “when trust is broken through deception, when an individual places himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority, that duty has been abandoned.”
UEFA runs soccer in Europe, CONCACAF does the same for North, Central America and the Caribbean, while the AFC governs the sport in Asia.
Bieniemy back
with Chiefs
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) -- Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has returned to the Kansas City Chiefs for his first practice since his wife was shot at their Virginia home. His 27-year-old son has been arrested in the shooting. Bieniemy was welcomed by fans as he joined the team at Missouri Western State University.
His son faces three charges, but court appearances have delayed for a mental health evaluation. Bieniemy had been in touch with Chiefs coach Andy Reid during his absence.
He previously left the Chiefs to call plays for the Commanders but returned after a stint with UCLA and the Bears to replace Matt Nagy, now the offensive coordinator of the Giants.
Home Olympics
in 2028
PHOENIX (AP) -- American athletes are feeling the pull of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as the Games approach. Many are making comebacks, driven by the chance to compete at home.
Track icon Allyson Felix and gold medal-winning gymnast Suni Lee are among those eyeing a return. The opportunity to perform on American soil is a major draw.
The chance to succeed also offers lucrative opportunities that didn’t exist the last time the Summer Games were held in the United States in Atlanta 30 years ago. For some, the allure of becoming a legend in the U.S. is strong. However, the pressure and risks are high, as athletes like Simone Biles have shown.
Hamlin holds
NASCAR lead
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) -- The NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway featured plenty of changes in the season point standings heading into the final month of the regular season.
Denny Hamlin leads the way with 923 points, 103 points ahead of Ty Gibbs, who won Sunday’s race.
Only four drivers have clinched Chase spots -- Hamlin, Gibbs, Ryan Blaney and Tyler Reddick. Austin Cindric, in the 16th and last Chase spot, has 526 points. The next three races will determine not just who can get the final spots, but also the seedings that could make a difference over the final 10 races.
Russia files
new claim
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Russia’s track and field federation says it has filed a new claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge sanctions imposed by World Athletics.
Athletes from Russia and ally Belarus have been excluded by World Athletics from its international events since March 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces.
The suspension was maintained at a council meeting in July. That prompted the Russian track federation to launch a separate appeal with CAS to try and overturn it. The federation’s new appeal targets restrictions which it says “infringe on the organisation’s rights” and prevents it fully representing Russian athletes’ interests.
Ingebrigtsen
wins gold
BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) -- Jakob Ingebrigtsen has showed plenty of kick on his comeback from injury by winning his fourth consecutive 5,000-meters title at the European championships in Birmingham.
The two-time Olympic champion from Norway hadn’t raced since having surgery early this year to clean up scar tissue on the protective sheath around his left Achilles tendon. With less than 100 meters to go, Ingebrigtsen was in third place. Then he accelerated and passed Florian Bremm of Germany in the final 50 meters to cross the line in 13 minutes, 15:29 seconds.
Bremm was second followed by France’s Etienne Daguinos.
Tim Anderson
retires
CHICAGO (AP) -- Tim Anderson, a two-time All-Star shortstop who won the 2019 AL batting title with the Chicago White Sox, has decided to retire after spending 10 years in the major leagues.
The 33-year-old Anderson hit .276 with 98 homers, 350 RBIs and 122 steals in 991 games. He played for the White Sox for eight seasons before finishing his career with short stints with Miami and the Los Angeles Angels. Anderson hasn’t appeared in a major league game since May 25, 2025, with the Angels.
Anderson says he experienced a lot of pain and a lot of great moments during his playing career.
