Mavs buy out
Klay Thompson
DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks and Klay Thompson have agreed on a contract buyout, ending a two-year tenure that was dramatically altered by the shocking trade of Luka Doncic. A person with knowledge of Thompson plays says the five-time All-Star intends to sign with the Miami Heat once he clears waivers.
Thompson joined Dallas in a sign-and-trade with Golden State believing he could be another 3-point threat and a plus defender alongside Doncic and another high-scoring guard in Kyrie Irving.
Instead, Doncic was traded in the middle of his first season and missed the playoffs in both of Thompson’s seasons. He was a four-time champion alongside Stephen Curry with the Warriors.
Lore agrees to
sell his stake
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx co-owner Marc Lore has agreed to sell his controlling stake in the franchises to limited partner Marc Stad at a $4.5 billion value barely a year after his purchase was finalized, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details of the agreement were not being publicized. Lore is a New York e-commerce entrepreneur. His partner and former baseball star Alex Rodriguez bought the NBA and WNBA clubs from Minnesota businessman Glen Taylor. That $1.5 billion sale got league approval in June 2025.
DeRozan signs
with Nuggets
DENVER (AP) -- A person with knowledge of the deal says DeMar DeRozan has agreed to sign a one-year contract with the Denver Nuggets for the veteran minimum of $3.9 million. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement hasn’t been announced.
It will be DeRozan’s fifth team in his 18th season for a six-time All-Star looking for his first championship. The addition of DeRozan gives the Nuggets a veteran backcourt presence after sending young, versatile wing Peyton Watson to Cleveland as part of a four-team trade.
DeRozan was the ninth overall pick by Toronto in 2009 and spent his first nine seasons with the Raptors. He was traded to San Antonio for Kawhi Leonard, and his former team won the title in Leonard’s only season in 2018-19.
NCAA gets
win in court
DENVER (AP) -- A federal appeals court has temporarily halted a court order that would have granted thousands of athletes an extra year of eligibility. This decision comes just eight days before the college football season begins. The lawsuit was filed by players who graduated high school in 2022 and were not included in the NCAA’s new rule granting most players five years of eligibility.
The ruling puts a hold on the situation until the appeal can be fully heard. The NCAA argues that fairness is subjective, as current athletes and schools have already built their rosters based on existing rules.
