Badgers 41-13
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- CJ Carr threw two touchdown passes, Aneyas Williams ran for 90 yards and two more scores and No. 4 Notre Dame pulled away in the second half for a 41-13 victory over Wisconsin on Sunday night at Lambeau Field.
This was the first college football game to take place at the home of the NFL's Green Bay Packers since Wisconsin upset a fifth-ranked LSU team 16-14 here in 2016.
Wisconsin also hung around for a while in this one as a three-touchdown underdog before Notre Dame outscored the Badgers 28-3 in the second half.
Notre Dame’s first touchdown came on a 3-yard reception by Green Bay resident James Flanigan, whose father and grandfather (each named Jim Flanigan) both played for the Packers.
“There’s three generations of Flanigans who have been on that field and made some plays,” Flanigan said. “That’s really special.”
Wisconsin hosts Western Illinois on Saturday.

its streak
BERLIN (AP) -- Breanna Stewart had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists to help the United States rout the Czech Republic 105-64. The Americans rebounded from their worst preliminary-round game in 50 years after edging Italy 55-52 on Sunday. Stewart set the tone early to make sure that wouldn’t happen again as the U.S. won its 33rd in a row in the tournament, going back to a semifinal loss to Russia in the 2006 World Cup.
Next up for the U.S. is the quarterfinal round on Thursday. They’ll face the winner of the Hungary vs. Japan game which takes place Tuesday.
Falcons won’t
play Penix
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -- Tua Tagovailoa has been selected as the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team announced the decision Monday after Tagovailoa’s monthslong competition with Michael Penix Jr.
Penix started nine games for the Falcons in 2025 before a season-ending ACL injury in November. Coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday that Cooper Rush will back up Tagovailoa and Penix will be inactive.
Tagovailoa signed a one-year deal with the Falcons in March after a six-year stint with the Miami Dolphins.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Elena Rybakina overpowered Naomi Osaka at the U.S. Open and is a win away from the No. 1 ranking in women’s tennis.
She just has to beat Zheng Qinwen, which won’t be easy. Even when Zheng goes down -- way, way down -- she refuses to stay there. Rybakina advanced to the quarterfinals Monday with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Osaka in a matchup of power-hitting Grand Slam champions.
The No. 2-seeded Rybakina is guaranteed to replace Aryna Sabalenka atop the WTA rankings if she reaches the semifinals in Flushing Meadows. Zheng rallied from a 5-0 deficit for the second straight match and beat No. 8 seed Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3
Luzardo
tosses shutout
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Jesús Luzardo pitched a complete game for the first time in his career, leading the Phillies to a 1-0 win over the Braves.
The game was the fastest in baseball this season, lasting just 1 hour and 51 minutes. Kyle Schwarber secured the win with his 43rd home run. Phillies manager Don Mattingly had confidence in Luzardo, who threw 109 pitches and struck out five.
Luzardo has been impressive since May, posting a 1.93 ERA over 135 innings. The Phillies are 18-3 in his last 21 starts. Luzardo plans to give the game ball to his parents.
Pochettino to
announce roster
(AP) -- U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino vows to change the attitude and habits of the men’s national soccer team as he starts a second term. He appeared to refer to Christian Pulisic’s decision to skip the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Pulisic skipped the Gold Cup to rest after his season with AC Milan and to be fresh for the 2026 World Cup, then picked up a pair of injuries at the World Cup and didn’t score in four games.
Pochettino plans to announce his roster on Sept. 17 for upcoming friendlies. He anticipates a mixture of veterans and youth.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina’s Bill Belichick says he believes his program “totally” has an atmosphere of following rules amid a school investigation into conduct within his football program. Later in the day, a UNC spokesman issued a statement saying the school “continues to support” the 74-year-old Belichick, who won six Super Bowl titles in the NFL.
The Tar Heels were off following their season-opening win against TCU in Ireland. But general manager Michael Lombardi resigned after being put on paid administrative leave in July. Then came additional news reports outlining additional potential areas of investigation. Belichick said everyone in the program is responsible “for doing things properly.”
