Michigan win
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- The Mid-American Conference has appealed the outcome of the Michigan-Western Michigan game, asking the NCAA and College Football Playoff administrators to recognize the Broncos as the actual winner.
Michigan won 13-12 on a Hail Mary pass after the replay official put one second back on the clock. An NBC replay showed a clock expiring before the ball hit the ground or any player, and rules analyst Terry McCaulay said on the broadcast that was a synced version of the stadium clock.
But the Big Ten said the call was correct and said it too used a shot of the game clock in the stadium.
Sabalenka
edges Noskova
NEW YORK (AP) -- Aryna Sabalenka kept alive her hopes for a third straight U.S. Open title by fighting off Linda Noskova 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (10-7) in a thrilling quarterfinal matchup of major champions.
Sabalenka finished off the match with a second-serve ace to turn back the Wimbledon champion and reach the semifinals in Flushing Meadows for the sixth straight year.
Sabalenka -- who needed to win to maintain any hope of keeping the No. 1 ranking -- will face either No. 3 Jessica Pegula or No. 26 Emma Navarro on Thursday in the semifinals.
Judge returns
to Yankees
NEW YORK (AP) -- Aaron Judge is returning to the New York Yankees after a 99-day absence caused by a broken rib.
A three-time AL MVP, Judge had missed 84 games since his last appearance on May 31. The 34-year-old skipped a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment.
Judge entered hitting .248 with 17 homers, 38 RBIs and a .907 OPS. He was initially injured attempting to avoid second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. during an unsuccessful try for a diving catch at Houston on April 26.
LSU cracks
AP top 10
(AP) -- LSU jumped back into the top 10 in the first Associated Press Top 25 college football poll of the regular season. Oregon slipped out of the top five and Michigan fell out of the rankings altogether after it needed a second-chance Hail Mary try at home to beat Western Michigan.
Ohio State remained No. 1 by a wide margin entering its showdown with No. 4 Texas on Saturday. The Buckeyes received 46 first-place votes from the voting panel of 69 writers and broadcasters. The other 23 first-place votes were divided among six teams; two of those votes went to Texas.
Meanwhile, leaders of the Southeastern Conference plan to meet Thursday to discuss possibly kicking LSU out of the conference. This follows a feud over whether players with NFL experience should return to college rosters.
Rams rule
out Donald
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Aaron Donald won’t play in the Los Angeles Rams’ season opener against the 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, delaying the three-time Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year’s return to the field after ending his retirement last month.
Donald rejoined the Rams in August after two seasons away from the team, and the eight-time first team All-Pro has been working his way back into game shape.
But with a 16-hour flight on deck ahead of the game, Rams coach Sean McVay decided the prudent decision was to keep Donald at home and allow him to continue his preparations.
Mahomes to
start opener
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Patrick Mahomes is set to start for the Kansas City Chiefs against the Denver Broncos on Monday night. Chiefs coach Andy Reid has confirmed that Mahomes will be under center, barring anything strange in practice this week, just nine months after tearing ligaments in his knee.
Mahomes participated in all offseason practices and training camp but skipped preseason games. He underwent surgery in December. While Mahomes is ready, left tackle Josh Simmons is unlikely to play because of a back injury. Undrafted rookie Khalil Benson is expected to start in his place against one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL.
LIV Golf seeks
bankruptcy
(AP) -- LIV Golf has filed for bankruptcy protection in a New Jersey court. The move was widely expected after Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund abruptly cut off support.
The fifth year of the breakaway league ended last month. LIV says part of its plan moving forward is to restructure with BC Partners as its lead investor. CEO Scott O’Neil says the plan is to expand the field to 75 players and have a 36-hole cut for the first time.
LIV estimates some $500 million in debt. Still to be determined is whether LIV will keep some of its biggest names.
Baker Mayfield
gets extension
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed on a $165 million, three-year contract extension, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team hasn't announced the contract extension.
Mayfield revived his career in Tampa Bay after replacing Tom Brady in 2023. He was entering the final season of his three-year, $100 million deal. Mayfield was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft by Cleveland. He made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons while leading the Bucs to consecutive NFC South titles.
