Retired
umpires sue
NEW YORK (AP) -- Five retired umpires have sued their retirement plan and its committee, claiming they are owed additional money. Joe West, Tom Hallion, Gerry Davis, Larry Vanover and Jerry Layne filed the lawsuit in federal court in New York. They allege their benefits were not correctly calculated under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974.
Their lawyer, Paul B. Holmes, said the amount owed exceeds $2 million. West said he was offered a small sum when he raised the issue. Major League Baseball declined to comment, citing the pending lawsuit.
Bronny James
in G League
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bronny James has been assigned to the Los Angeles Lakers’ G League affiliate again. James has moved up and down between the NBA and the G League throughout his three-year career.
The oldest son of LeBron James has only played mop-up minutes during the Lakers’ 7-2 start to the current season, making five appearances and scoring 0.8 points per game in 2.4 minutes per contest despite the home fans regularly chanting for him late in those victories. The Lakers kept Bronny James even after his famous father’s departure for the Philadelphia 76ers last summer, but the guard has appeared in only 74 games in his three NBA seasons.
Larson goes
for title
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) -- Kyle Larson’s championship media day at Homestead-Miami Speedway could be summed up in one word: awkward. Larson was the lone Cup Series “contender” on hand for the event.
Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin, both technically still in the mix for the title, were excused. So Larson was alone on the stage, the first time that’s happened since NASCAR moved to a playoff format more than two decades ago.
Larson holds a 67-point lead over Bell heading into the season finale at Homestead and needs only nine points to secure his third Cup title in six years.
