Norway boys claim top spot in Class ABC poll
North Central stays atop Class D
IRONWOOD — Norway boys basketball team has climbed to No. 1 in the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s Class ABC boys basketball poll.
Coach Ben Leiker’s unbeaten Knights (10-0) knocked off Negaunee last week to take over first place in the Mid-Peninsula Conference. They host Westwood tonight.
Marquette (9-1) and Iron Mountain (9-1) stand second and third, respectively, in the Class ABC boys basketball rankings.
Unbeaten North Central (9-0), on the verge of breaking the state record for consecutive wins, tops the Class D boys basketball poll.
Coach Adam Mercier’s Jets, with a win tonight over Rock Mid-Peninsula, will extend its winning streak to 65 games dating back to the beginning of the 2014-15 season, and would tie Chassell’s 1956-58 mark for the record.
The Jets could then break the mark against Bark River-Harris in a home game on Jan. 27. If for the record, the game will be streamed live on the MHSAA.tv website.
In the Class ABC girls poll, unbeaten Houghton (11-0) ranks above No. 2 Munising (10-0) and No. 3 Norway (10-0).
Forest Park (8-2) took over sole possession of the Class D girls poll. Cedarville is second.
