KINGSFORD — The Kingsford High School boys track and field team is off and running.

The Flivvers began the season last month in the Northland Pines Invitational in Eagle River, Wis. They resume the season Tuesday, April 18, at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

“The meet went well as we had a short time to prepare and we didn’t have all of our athletes there,” Kingsford coach Doug Roberts said of the NPI. “We took second in the meet and had some real good individual performances.”

The host Eagles scored 145 points in the six-team meet, beating the Flivvers (131), Ironwood (111), Menominee Indian (38), Wakefield-Marenisco (18), and Munising (10).

Flivvers senior Trevor Roberts won the 55-meter dash and long jump (19-8.5) and ran a leg of the winning 800 relay (1:43.95). The other relay members are Jonathan Schmutzler, Trevor Povolo and Micheal Creighton.

Brad VanRemortel, who placed second in the 2016 U.P. Division 1 300 hurdles, captured the NIP 55 hurdles and finished second in the 200 hurdles.

Marcus Kazianka claimed the 3200 run (12:42.41) and joined Michael Halley, Daniel Lindgren and Blane Newman in winning the 3200 relay (9:25.05).

The Flivvers roster numbers 31 boys.

“We are returning some key guys,” Roberts said. “We were able to start practice outside on March 13 and only had a couple days in the gym which is nice.

“I think our strength will be in the sprints, hurdles and relays. This is a really good group of kids and they are working hard so far.”

Aaron Lanning and Steve Lehman assist with distance. Tracy Roberts assists with hurdles. Bryon Johnson and Nate Hegerman assist with throwers. Becky Cecconi and Dick Berlinski are multipurpose assistants.

Kingsford’s first home meet is Tuesday, May 2, with Escanaba.
