Track and field: Iron Mountain girls third in home quad

IRON MOUNTAIN — Marquette held off Negaunee to win a girls track quadrangular meet Tuesday at Mountaineer Stadium.

The Redettes, 97.33, slipped past the Miners, 95.83, for first place. The host Mountaineers took third, 35.83, followed by Gladstone, 28.

Marquette’s Jacque Commarata (100 hurdles, 16.79; 300 hurdles, 49.46) and Izabell Peterson (100 dash, 13.63; 200, 27.44) each won two events.

Clara Johnson led Negaunee with firsts in 1600 (5:42.52) and 800 (2:35.94) runs.

Marquette’s boys chalked up 115 to beat Iron Mountain and Negaunee, both at 50, and Gladstone, 41.

“It was a great meet with many races coming down to close battles,” said Mountaineers coach Kevin Sullivan.

Marquette’s Ethan Martysz won the 100 (11.56) and 200-meter dashes (23.47) while teammate Garrett Rudden took the 1600 (4:41.56) and 800 (2:03.62).

Iron Mountain’s Aaron Bolo (15.91) and Charlie Gerhard (16.71) ran one-two in the 110 hurdles. Jacob Tucker cleared his personal best of 6-feet even in the high jump to finish second to Marquette’s Raphael Millado at 6-2.
