Football: Trojans visit Pickford; Wykons host Frankfort

IRON MOUNTAIN — Forest Park plays Friday in Pickford and West Iron County returns to Nelson Field against Frankfort on Saturday in the next round of the MHSAA state football playoffs.
Forest Park (8-2) and unbeaten Pickford (11-0) will meet at 6 p.m. CST Friday in an eight-player Division 2 state semifinal.
“This agreement is pending MHSAA approval,” Forest Park athletic director Bill Santilli said Sunday.
Forest Park-Pickford winner will play Kinde-North Huron (10-1) or Portland St Patrick (10-1) for the state championship at the Superior Dome in Marquette.
In a Division 8 regional, West Iron County (10-1) and Frankfort (8-2) will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner faces Lincoln Alcona (9-2) or Saginaw Nouvel (11-0) in the state semifinals.
West Iron County won its first district title since 2001 by beating Norway 20-14 at Nelson Field.
Frankfort, scoring 13 points in the first 28 seconds, downed previously unbeaten Gaylord St. Mary 53-30 in the district finals. The Wykons would have traveled to Gaylord if the Snowbirds had beaten the Panthers.
In the other Division 8 regionals, Mendon (11-0) takes on Climax-Scotts (9-2) and Ottawa Lake Whiteford (11-0) meets Clarkston Everest Collegiate (9-2).
Three other UP teams are still alive in the postseason.
Menominee (8-3), which upset Kingsford 24-21 for the district title, will travel to Reed City (10-1) in a Division 5 regional final. Menominee defeated Reed City 40-14 in last year’s regionals.
Menominee-Reed City winner will face Muskegon Oakridge (9-2) or Saginaw Swan Valley (10-1) in the semifinals. Portland (10-1), coached by Iron Mountain High School grad John Novara, will face defending state champion Grand Rapids West Catholic (9-2) in another Division 5 regional.
Stephenson (9-2) will travel to Central Lake (11-0) for an eight-player Division 1 state semifinal. The winner meets Bellevue (10-1) or Deckerville (10-1) for the state title.
Escanaba (9-2) will host Williamston (7-4) in a Division 4 regional. The winner takes on Belding (9-2) or Grand Rapids Catholic Central (11-0) in the state semifinals.
