Bowling: Mountaineers’ Doucette, Bastian qualify for UP conference semifinals

MARINETTE, Wis. — Iron Mountain’s Maddy Doucette and Hanna Bastian reached the semifinals of the UP High School Bowling Conference girls singles tournament Saturday at Dome Lanes.

Five of the seven Mountaineers advanced through the first qualifying round to bowl three more games. Freshman Lexi Jacko scored a 471, sophomore Bastian (469), juniors Doucette (455) and Natalie Dykhuis (414) and senior Carina Anderson (416).

After both qualifying blocks were completed, three were seeded for the round of 16 stepladder match. Doucette found herself as the fifth seed, 992 score; Jacko, 10th, 914; and Hanna Bastian, 11th, 908.

Doucette and Bastian moved on to the round of eight. Doucette dispatched Alissa Johnson of Ishpeming 306-251 and Bastian bested Amanda McIntire of Marquette 307-247. Jacko fell to Escanaba’s Lindsey Juhl 304-385.

Both Mountaineers moved to the final four in very close matches. Doucette found herself bowling against Megan McIntire of Marquette, winning 332-323. Bastian’s match against Megan Wilkins of Ishpeming was decided by only three pins, 362-359.

The semifinal round was an Iron Mountain-Ishpeming affair with Doucette taking on Kassidy Pirkola and Bastian facing Caitlyn Lee. Doucette fell to Pirkola 281-341 while Lee topped Bastian 376-341.

UP girls single title went to Ishpeming’s Caitlyn Lee by a two game score of 327-300 over Kassidy Pirkola.

Fifty-four girls competed in the tournament.

The boys and girls play at 10 a.m. Saturday for the UP team crown at Bowl-a-Rama in Escanaba.
