Flivver 3s spill Maroons

MENOMINEE — Early pressure and 3-point shooting led the Kingsford Flivvers to a 60-48 Great Northern Conference girls basketball win over Menominee Monday.

The Flivvers (8-8, 2-4) knocked down seven 3s in the first half .

“We hit some shots early in the game,” Kingsford coach Mike Cross said. “That gave us the cushion we needed.

“We haven’t been shooting well, and I told them that was impressive to come down here and do that.”

Four of those 3-pointers came in the first quarter, and the Maroons trailed 15-8 heading into the second.

“Kingsford puts great pressure on you, makes you play a lot faster than you want to,” Menominee coach Lucas Chouinard said. “At times we didn’t handle the pressure very well. Once we got into our half court set we were able to be successful. We were able to play a little bit inside-outside.”

Menominee bounced back in the second quarter and made four 3s in that period.

The Maroons cut the lead to 33-26 at the half.

“It could have gotten away from us there,” Chouinard said. “When adversity hit tonight, the girls responded. I’m very proud of how they battled through that adversity.”

The Maroons cut the lead to 39-34 in the third quarter, but the Flivvers went on a 10-0 run to pull away.

“I thought we shared the ball,” Cross said. “The passing was excellent tonight. When we play like a team and share the ball and trust each other, the sky is the limit with these girls. They showed that tonight.”

Kingsford led 49-36 after the third quarter and made free throws down the stretch to keep the Maroons at bay.

“We started hitting shots, and we got to the free-throw line and made those,” Cross said. “We know going in we’re not a real big team. We got to play that full-court game to make up for the lack of size.”

Jordyn Kriegl led all scorers with 19 points for the Flivvers.

“She’s a very fundamentally sound player,” Chouinard said. “At times we got caught trying to reach. Jordyn is very good with the basketball so if you try to reach, she’s going to blow right by you.”

Brooke Kriegl and Sam Cross each scored 12 points for Kingsford.

Emma Anderson led the Maroons with 13 points. Emma Hofer and Erin Barrette each scored 10.

The Flivvers visit Iron Mountain on Friday.

Kingsford won the junior varsity game 36-32.
