Girls basketball: Mid Peninsula edges Norway in close game

ROCK — Mid Peninsula held off Norway 49-45 in Skyline Central Conference action Thursday.

The Knights (5-11, 3-4) held a 15-12 lead after the first quarter but the Wolverines pulled ahead with a 14-4 run in the second quarter. Norway had a 26-23 point advantage in the second half.

“It was a tight game for all four quarters,” said Norway Coach Joe Tinti, noting the difference was three points in the last three minutes of the game. “We had our chances and just weren’t able to take advantage of our opportunities. We need to make the easy shots and not force our medium to long range looks.”

Haley Clifford led Norway with 13 points and Mackenzie Clifford had 11.

The Knights shot 26 percent from the floor and 47 percent from the free-throw line.

The Knights host Bark River-Harris on Monday and Munising on Tuesday.

“Next week will be a big test for us,” Tinti said. “We hope to be able make some progress since the first time we played Bark River (in December) and it will be nice to have Munising back in Norway.”

Norway defeated Mid Peninsula 47-15 in the junior varsity game.
