IM, Flivv wrestlers qualify for MHSAA Div. 3 regional tourney

GRAYLING — Three wrestlers from Kingsford and Iron Mountain qualified for the MHSAA Division 3 individual regional wrestling tournament at Kalkaska.

Flivvers’ Trevor Povolo finished finished second at 152 while teammate Eddie Cardew was third at heavyweight in the district tournament Saturday. Iron Mountain’s Caleb Burklund was fourth at 171.

Povolo suffered a 6-5 loss to Gladstone’s Brody Sanville in the finals.

“Trevor ended up injuring his shoulder during the match but he should be ready to go for regionals,” said Kingsford Coach Darren Groleau.

Cardew (29-8) lost in the semifinals to Gladstone’s Cole Dawson but won three other matches by pin.

“Eddie had a great day once again,” Groleau said.

The Flivvers coach said August Early, Ethan Wilcox, Jakob Horton and Kalvin Nichols lost in the “blood round” Saturday, where defeat means the wrestler is out of medal contention.

“August, Ethan, Jakob and Kalvin all wrestled their butts off,” Groleau said. “I am proud of each and every one of those boys. Each one of them left everything on the mat.”

Early (119) was edged 8-7 in the consolation round by Fabian Vilchis-Mendoza of Hart.

“August lost a tough match,” Groleau said. “He ended up turning the kid in the 20 seconds but just couldn’t stick him.”

Ethan Wilcox (125) was pinned in the quarterfinals by eventual champion Isaac Reynolds of Manistee.

“Ethan ran into some studs this weekend but he hung in there with all of them and he wrestled hard,” Groleau said.

Jakob Horton (135) bowed 6-2 in the quarterfinals to Andrew Whitney of Hart.

“Jakob lost a very tough quarterfinal,” said Groleau, noting the match was tied in the third period. “He wrestled great the whole match to tie it up. I’m proud of how Jakob wrestled all year.”

Kalvin Nichols (189) was pinned in the quarterfinals by third-seeded Tyler Withers of Grayling.

“Kalvin gave Withers a tough match,” Groleau said. “He was winning the match just made a mistake and got caught.

“Kalvin had a great year and we are very proud of how he came along this year.”

Burklund, a freshman from Norway, advanced to the regionals after posting three pins on the day. He lost in the semifinals and third-place match.

“This Division 3 district was always tough but with the addition of Whitehall, Hart and Montague it got even tougher,” said Mountaineers coach Cory McLaren.

Mountaineers’ Trevor Malburg (119) and Jon Carrion (145) both went 1-2 in the district. Malburg pinned Tucker Mertes of Grayling while Carrion won on technical fall over Cody Isrow of Kalkaska.

Iron Mountain hosts the Division 3 Region 117 team tournament Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m. The Mountaineers and Gladstone will meet in one semifinal while the other matches Manistee and West Michigan Conference champion Whitehall.
