West Iron wins defensive duel

IRON RIVER — West Iron County recovered from a slow start and defeated Hancock 38-31 in West PAC girls basketball Monday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

The Wykons (14-2, 4-2) trailed 6-2 after the first quarter but bounced back for a 12-12 halftime draw. WIC’s Eden Golliher scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second half.

“It was a defensive battle on both ends of the floor,” said WIC Coach Eric Shamion.

D’Andra Kero’s 14 points topped Hancock.

The Wykons honored their four seniors Monday — Grace Gasperini, Erin Possanza, Natalie Tomasoski and Aly Pangrazzi.

“They all started and gave a great effort,” Shamion said.

WIC’s Emily Nelson, a 6-foot-1 sophomore standout, did not play in the game. She is going through concussion protocol after being inadvertently hit in the mouth during last week’s game with Forest Park.

The Wykons host Westwood tonight.

WIC won the junior varsity game 29-21.
