Flivvers begin boys tennis season

Boys Tennis

MENOMINEE — Kingsford, playing the Yooper Classic boys tennis tournament under a revised format, opened the season Friday.

With only four indoor courts available instead of eight, the Flivvers played against Westwood and Gladstone. Each singles and doubles played 45-minute matches.

“It was great to get out of the gym and play against someone else,” said Kingsford Coach John VanDusen. “Each player was able to play 90 minutes of solid tennis against good competition. All players showed improvement as the day played on.”

Flivver No. 1 singles Brett Hicks won both rounds. Nick McCole beat Westwood at No. 2 singles. Caleb Boone made his debut at No. 3 singles. Logan Smith downed Gladstone at No. 4 singles.

“Brett Hicks did a great job,” VanDusen said. “Caleb Boone in his first ever tennis match made huge strides. He didn’t win but the experience will help him this year. He will make up for a lack of experience with hustle. He will never give up on a ball. Logan Smith played tough.”

Preston Strong moved up to play No. 1 doubles with Tyler Beauchamp. They won against both Westwood and Gladstone. Flivver No. 2 doubles Bruce Bilgreen-Travis Taff defeated Gladstone. Matt Moreau and Jack Perpich took both rounds at No. 3 doubles. Nathan Arndt and Ren Thorne spilled Gladstone at No. 4 doubles.

“Westwood played tough against Preston and Tyler, and brought them to several deuce games,” VanDusen said. “Bruce Bilgreen and Travis Taff played solid.”

Kingsford hosts Menominee on Tuesday and Gladstone on Thursday.

“We are excited to have outdoor practice on Monday,” VanDusen said.
