Tennis: Kingsford shuts out Mountaineers
KINGSFORD — Kingsford pulled out a pair of three-set singles matches and blanked Iron Mountain 8-0 in tennis Thursday.
The Flivvers (6-2-2), with No. 1 singles Brett Hicks ill and unable to play, took the opener with Nick McCole moving up to beat Ryan Hakamaki 6-1, 6-0.
Kingsford outlasted Iron Mountain in the next two matches, as No. 2 singles Jack Perpich topped Shane Brooks 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and No. 3 Caleb Boone spilled Dominic Schinderle 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
“Jack and Shane had a great match,” said Kingsford coach John VanDusen. “It was back and forth all the way. Shane has a great forehand. Jack was able to mix up some drop shots and gained the advantage in the third set.”
VanDusen said Boone was “mentally tough” after losing the first set.
“Caleb kept his wits about him and won the next two,” VanDusen said.
Kingsford No. 2 doubles Reece Fortner-Ethan Fox struggled early at the net before beating Michael Colavecchi and Geo Colavecchi 6-3, 6-2.
“Reece and Ethan were able to find their groove as the match continued,” VanDusen said.
Kingsford competes Saturday in the Negaunee Invite. Iron Mountain (3-5) travels to Escanaba on Monday.
