IRON MOUNTAIN — West Iron County overcame Iron Mountain and windy conditions in a 8-0 boys tennis shutout Tuesday at Amos Marston Eastside Courts.

The Wykons (3-0) won seven of their matches in two sets, the other by forfeit. The Mountaineers dropped to 0-2 on the season.

“Beautiful temperatures with some strong winds but overall a nice day for tennis,” said WIC coach Joe Serbentas. “Every match gives us new challenges to work on at practices.

“All the flights did an excellent job of focusing on strategy during the matches. We have been stressing the concept of setting up points during practices and the players have really developed an understanding of the importance of angles and deep corner shots.”

The Mountaineers knew they had double-trouble with the unbeaten Wykons and wind.

“The Wykons are a tough team and the wind played no favors for anyone this afternoon,” said IM coach Anthony Tatangelo. “The scorecard doesn’t show how close some of the matches were and I’m glad for the effort my boys gave today.”

At No. 1 singles, Neil Tomasoski turned back Ryan Hakamaki 6-4, 6-1.

“Hakamaki did well in the first set,” Tatangelo said. “He is learning to play at the number one spot. He had several shots in the right spot but Neil seemed to return most of them.”

WIC No. 1 doubles Brandon Henschel-Kevin Ballinger turned back Dakota Galeazzi-Joey Bogaudo 7-5, 6-2.

“Dakota and Joey played well,” said Tatangelo, noting they nearly beat last year’s UP runners-up in the first set. “We know as a team and individual what we need to work on to improve and will be back practicing and fine tuning for Escanaba on Thursday.”

WIC travels to Gwinn today.

“We are steadily improving as we move along this season,” Serbentas said. “Iron Mountain has a very young team with new players that will become more comfortable with the game as they move along this season.”
