U19 Northern Stars 2nd in Wausau tournament

Soccer

WAUSAU, Wis. — Niagara Northern Stars U19 boys soccer team placed second in the Mountain Bay Cup in Wausau.

The Stars scored three second-half goals to defeat Wausau MC United 4-0 on Sunday to claim second place. David Brule scored twice while Dane Stanchina and Ben Backlund also scored against Wausau. Backlund and Ryan Hakamaki had assists.

Goalkeeper Caleb Bryant recorded his second shutout of the tourney.

“Caleb was supported by strong play from the defense,” said Coach Greg Kulas. “We played a very good possession game.”

The Stars, according to Kulas, were patient and passed the ball very well which eventually wore down the Wausau team.

In earlier games, the Stars played to a 0-0 draw with Howard and lost to eventual tournament champion Eau Claire 3-1 on Saturday.

“We played a very strong game against Howard,” Kulas said. ” The defense limited Howard to just a few scoring opportunities, with Caleb making several very good saves.

“Offensively, some very good passing created several scoring opportunities, but the Howard keeper kept them from scoring.”

Against Eau Claire, Backlund scored the Stars goal. That was the only goal allowed by Eau Claire in the tourney.
