IRON MOUNTAIN — Norway’s Chad Tirschel and Iron Mountain’s Tom LaVigne captured the UP Men’s Best Ball Tournament in a two-hole playoff Sunday at Pine Grove Country Club.

Tirschel’s 25-foot uphill birdie putt on the second playoff hole (No. 18) decided the tournament. Tirschel and LaVigne matched pars with Marquette’s Dennis Hruska and Scott Koski on the first extra hole (No. 1).

With rain wiping out Saturday’s round and Pine Grove playing to a par-71 for Sunday, Tirschel-LaVigne and Hruska-Koski each shot 68 in regulation.

Tirschel-LaVigne birdied holes 6, 12, 13 and 15, with only one bogey on No. 4. Hruska-Koski, who played a bogey-free round, notched birdies on 1, 2 and 18.

Eight teams shot 69 including 16-time champions Jim Markell of Iron Mountain and Dan Anderson of Norway.

Paul Bujold and Dale Ward, who tee off Monday in the UP Senior tournament in Marquette, took first flight with a 69.

In the annual Father’s Day weekend tournament, former Kingsford High School standout Jon Wolfe notched the tournament’s lone eagle on No. 15. Wolfe, who won the 2000 Dickinson County men’s tournament 10 strokes, teamed up Sunday with his dad, Ron, to finish second in fourth flight with a 77.
