Major LL: Norway sinks Kingsford, 12-2

Plays Esky in districts Thursday

IRON MOUNTAIN — A seven-run fourth inning sent Norway past Kingsford 12-2 in the Little League major (age 12-under) baseball pre-district elimination game Tuesday at Larry Barkle Eastside Field.

Norway, which beat Kingsford for a second time in the pre-district, will meet district host Escanaba at 7 p.m. EST on Thursday at Karl Dickson Field. Both teams will take one loss from the pre-district to the district. Iron Mountain and Gladstone will square off at 5 p.m. Thursday in a battle of unbeatens.

In Tuesday’s elimination game, Norway snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The seven-run fourth brought on the mercy rule.

Shaun Schutte had four of Norway’s 13 hits and scored three runs. Alex Ortman tagged a triple and single while Ian Popp doubled and singled. Alec Haferkorn and Ryan Erickson each added two hits. Blake Holmes and Christian Hedmark had singles.

Popp, Haferkorn and Ortman each scored two runs.

Kingsford pitchers Will Kelley and Gavin Grondin combined to strike out four and walk four.

Kingsford’s Eli Wallis and Grondin each singled and scored in the third inning. Nic Novara and Wyatt Scott also singled for Kingsford.

Norway pitchers Haferkorn and Ortman allowed four hits, struck out one and walked three.
