Crystal Falls connection to Lake Linden shrine

Wilbur Schenk named

LAKE LINDEN — Former Crystal Falls schools superintendent and principal Wilbur Schenk has been named to the second group of inductees into the Lake Linden-Hubbell High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The induction will take place Sept. 22.

Schenk lettered in football and basketball while attending Lake Linden High School. He was a member of Lake Linden’s 1932 UP state championship basketball team.

After high school, he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He then went to Northern Michigan University, where he played football, basketball and track. He was captain of the basketball team during the 1939-40 year. 

Schenk graduated with a degree in physical education in 1940 where he began teaching and coaching in Tustin, Mich. When WWII broke out, he joined the Air Force.

After the war ended, he taught in Paw Paw where besides teaching, he coached football, basketball, wrestling and track. His track team won the Class C state championship in 1947.

He advanced to principal of the high school in Paw Paw from 1948-1950.

In 1950, he moved to Crystal Falls to become principal. He was named superintendent in 1965 and retired in 1980.

Also named to the Lake Linen Hall of Fame are Scott Artley, Walter Barkell, Aaron Fezzey, Richard Fezzey, Gerald Perreault and Jackie (Keranen) Monette.
