Ishpeming, Marinette win Munising Invite cross country

MUNISING — Ishpeming’s boys and Marinette’s girls ran to cross country titles Tuesday in the Munising Invitational.
Ishpeming grabbed four of the top six places and captured its fifth straight title with 27 points. The Hematites were followed by Marinette 69, Newberry 110, Cheboygan 133 and Esky 164.
The Marinette girls were repeat winners at 55, followed by Menominee 86, Kingsford 104, Ishpeming 116 and Westwood 120. Esky had 181 points.
Marinette senior Carson Polomis was the boys’ winner on the cloudy, cool and windy day. He covered the 3.1-mile course on the Valley Spur Cross Country trails in 17 minutes, three seconds. He was followed by Ishpeming’s Spencer Giroux (17:32) and Jonah Broberg (17:46).
North Central senior Griffin Johnson took ninth (18:51).
Kingsford’s Lily Menghini took fifth (21:55) and teammate Sarah Kulas was seventh (22:20).
“It’s nice that we have Lily and Sarah working together and pushing each other,” said Kingsford coach Dan Carey.
