Miners holds off Wykons

IRON RIVER — Negaunee claimed a pair of three-set singles matches and downed West Iron County 5-3 in girls tennis Monday at Nelson Field Courts.

“Our team went toe to toe with Negaunee and had some really tough battles,” said WIC coach Joe Serbentas, noting three-set singles setbacks at two and four. “I was proud of our effort and matches like this are building blocks for later in the year.”

WIC No. 1 singles Katarina Serbentas downed Abby Nelson 6-1, 6-4. Negaunee No. 4 singles Lilly Nelson needed three sets to beat Livea Mazurek.

“Katarina continues to hit the ball well and keeps her opponents deep in the court to set up her points,” Serbentas said. “Livea has quietly put together a nice start to the season at four singles even after falling to her opponent today. Her improvement in singles has been tremendous.”

Wykons captured the top two doubles with Eden Golliher-Tori Bociek and Emily Nelson-Anna Malmquist.

“I was very proud of my one and two doubles teams for dictating the action during their points and finishing points at the net,” Serbentas said. “We need to cut down on unforced errors as we move forward.”

The Wykons (4-1) visit Marquette today, Escanaba on Wednesday; and Westwood on Thursday. They host Iron Mountain on Friday.
