Football: Flivvs set for Wausau East on Saturday

KINGSFORD — Kingsford takes on another Wisconsin opponent Saturday afternoon.

The Flivvers (1-3) opened the season with losses to Wisconsin unbeatens Menasha, St. Mary’s Springs and Fond du Lac. Wausau East (1-4) comes nowhere close to the credentials of the previous Dairy State foes but Kingsford head coach Chris Hofer expressed concerns with the host Lumberjacks.

“They have some good backs that scare you,” Hofer said of the “pretty young” Wausau East squad. “They have some good players.”

Bryce Stalsberg rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown when the Lumberjacks edged Rhinelander 13-12 for their only win this season. Four turnovers also factored in the week three victory.

The Lumberjacks, in a wing-T formation, rushed for 196 yards.

“We established our fullback tonight and that’s what we didn’t have the first couple of games,” Grundy told the Wausau Daily Herald. “Once you get that middle going, you should be able to open up the outside.”

Jack Kane, a 5-foot-10 senior, is the quarterback.

“They have a little bit different look on offense,” Hofer said. “They’re an old two tight end team. We haven’t seen that this year.”

Former West Iron County assistant Kevin Grundy, who coached at Wausau West for 10 years, now leads the Wausau East program. The Lumberjacks sport a 5-37 record over the past five seasons.

Kingsford opened the Great Northern Conference campaign last week by downing Gladstone 33-14. Quarterback Luke Terrian, absent since an ankle injury in the opening minutes of the season opener, rushed and passed for scores.

“We have to execute better,” Hofer said. “We had too many lost-yardage plays again. But we made a lot of big plays (for scores).”

Nate Rutter jumped a pass route and returned a pass interception 78 yards. Michael Creighton covered 85 yards with a third-quarter fumble that put the Flivvers ahead 19-7. Trevor Povolo ran off left tackle for 84 yards.

“That play was blocked really good,” Hofer said.

Creighton led the Flivvers with 17 defensive points, followed by Rutter, 15; Andrew Mann, 14; Tyler Beauchamp and Carter Stanchina, 13; Jack Zimmerman, 12; and Povolo, 10. Beauchamp also recovered a Gladstone fumble.

Kingsford returns to Great Northern Conference play next week when Marquette visits Flivver Field.
