Tennis: Wykons blank Hematites

IRON RIVER — West Iron County prepared for the Great Northern Conference girls tennis tournament by blanking Ishpeming 8-0 Monday at Nelson Field Courts.

The Wykons (10-1-3) and Kingsford will be among the GNC teams playing Wednesday in Escanaba.

“This was a nice tuneup before the GNCs,” said West Iron head coach Joe Serbentas. “We showed the patience to set up points in singles that we are going to need against our GNC opponents.”

Wykons No. 1 singles Katarina Serbentas and No. 1 doubles Eden Golliher-Tori Bociek posted two-set wins over the Hematites.

“Both our top flights continue to roll and finish matches with authority and focus,” said coach Serbentas. “We are looking forward to the challenges ahead of us with the conference tournament and the UPs next week.”

West Iron and Iron Mountain will be at Westwood for the UP Division 2 tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
