Gordon, Backlund lead Flivvs

EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — Kobe Gordon scored six goals and Ben Backlund added three as Kingsford downed Ashland 11-5 Saturday in boys soccer.

Marcus Michaud and Michael Halley also scored goals for the Flivvers.

“Our boys came off the warm bus to 42-degree weather,” said Kingsford Coach Jeff Gordon. “The weather did have a chance to affect our game.”

The coach cited midfielders for “outstanding” play.

“Marcus Michaud, Brennan Phillips, Michael Halley and Austin Hirthe defended the center of the field and helped keep the ball in our side of the field,” Gordon said. “Cade Counter and Dennis Neuens came off the bench and helped our team to the win.”

In the second game, Kingsford bowed to Northland Pines 5-1.

“Northland Pines came in fresh and moved the ball,” said Gordon, noting his team had a 25-minute wait before the game started. “It was 39 degrees at game time and we came out slow. We didn’t move the ball that good and we struggled keeping the ball on our side of the field.”

Kobe Gordon left in the first half with a pulled muscle and did not return.

“We had shots at goal that could have made a difference but we couldn’t put them into the net,” Gordon said.

The only goal came 32 minutes in the first half when Ben Backlund crossed the ball to Marcus Michaud for a tap in.

“We’re working on getting more consistent play no matter who we play,” Gordon said.
