Boys basketball: Nordics cruise past Mid Peninsula

FELCH — North Dickinson hit a groove in the third quarter of a 60-42 win over Mid Peninsula on Thursday.

The Nordics (3-4) outscored Mid Peninsula 16-6 in the third quarter to pad on a 24-23 halftime lead.

North Dickinson head coach Chris Mattson said there was an emphasis about playing with more energy in the third quarter after losing to Stephenson on Dec. 20 in which the Nordics had no energy coming out of halftime.

“We had a lead and came out poor in the third quarter and it probably cost us the game,” Mattson said. “We talked tonight about coming out and playing better in the third quarter, with maybe a little more energy. That’s exactly what happened. We hit four 3s in that third quarter and it really sparked us.”

Quenten Ackerman led the Nordics with 22 points. Matthew Bruette and Cameron Schultz added 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Mattson said the team also emphasized passing in recent practices — finding an open guy and making the extra pass rather than forcing a shot. It paid dividends for North Dickinson, which shot 19 of 43 for the game. The Nordics assisted on 15 of those shots.

“Unselfish play in that second half,” Mattson said. “The ball was going from teammate to teammate in the second half. That was really nice to see.”

North Dickinson JV won 61-20. Brennan Donaldson had 20 points. Maximus Mattson and Tucker Mattson had 18 points.

North Dickinson visits North Central on Monday.
