Boys basketball: Nordics spill Mid Peninsula

FELCH — North Dickinson used a strong defensive effort to subdue Mid Peninsula’s Kennedy Englund in a 45-39 win on Friday.

The Nordics (4-4), who surrendered 29 points to Englund less than two weeks ago, held her to seven points. Briana Smith was tasked with guarding her one-on-one with help defense.

“She did a fantastic job and we held her to seven points tonight which is outstanding,” North Dickinson head coach Kirk Mattson said. “Everybody contributed tonight. We had pretty good team defense tonight and I’m pretty proud of them … We had to run her off the 3-point line and not let her get open shots. We tried to not let her get the ball as best we could.”

Turns out North Dickinson’s defense preserved the win as the offense struggled, shooting 19 of 57 (33 percent).

“We had a rough night shooting the basketball, but we made up for that with great team defense tonight and that was the difference,” Mattson said.

Smith also finished with 11 points for the Nordics and Hannah Clark added 10.

North Dickinson also survived 23 team fouls without anybody fouling out.

“A lot of the fouls was because we were working so hard on defense. We were just really focused on guarding Kennedy and helping out,” Mattson said. “We just got caught at times out of position. We just gotta watch the fouls that aren’t necessary.”

North Dickinson JV won 60-31.

The Nordics visit Forest Park on Tuesday.
