Girls basketball: Laturi, Wykons hand Negaunee 1st loss

Laturi hits 3rd quarter threes, has 14 points for WIC

IRON RIVER — West Iron County hit five third-quarter treys and spilled previously unbeaten Negaunee 53-42 in West PAC action Tuesday.

The Wykons (5-2) managed a 21-15 halftime lead and pulled ahead 40-26 after Colbi Laturi tallied three third-quarter triples while Katarina Serbentas and Riley Stine each had one.

Laturi, who had foot surgery in October, made four three-point field goals for the second consecutive game.

Laturi led the Wykons with 14 points and Eden Golliher added 12. Emily Nelson had five blocks.

Negaunee (7-1), ranked second in the UP, collected a game-high 15 points from Abby Hill. The Miners got within nine in the fourth quarter.

“We were able to handle the pressure,” said West Iron coach Eric Shamion, his Wykons ranked fifth in the first UP poll. “We really played intense, man-to-man defense. That really made Negaunee work for every shot and every point.”

Negaunee won the junior varsity game.

The Wykons host Menominee on Thursday.
