Girls basketball: Mid Peninsula edges Trojans in overtime

ROCK — Mid Peninsula overcame Mercedes Simmons’ 26 points and 24 rebounds to outlast Forest Park 60-54 in overtime in Skyline Central Conference girls basketball Tuesday.

The Trojans (3-3, 2-1) and Wolverines played to a 54-54 tie in regulation. MP converted 25 free throws to FP’s eight in the game.

“It was a night where everything seemed to go wrong for us,” said FP coach Jackie Giuliani. “Mid Pen played a great game and had three players that scored well.

“Between foul trouble and an injury to Dalas Loehr we struggled to play our game.”

Simmons added five blocks and four steals before fouling out.

“It was not a lack of effort,” Giuliani said. “Our girls fought to the end of overtime but they were physically and mentally exhausted by the time we got into overtime.

“When they took the lead early we had to exhaust ourselves even more chasing them.”

FP’s Claudia Nocerini had six assists and Cassie Divine chipped in nine points.

“It is one of those games that you just want to turn the page and forget about for a little bit,” Giuliani said. “We will go back and learn from it, but tonight I am just hoping that Dalas’ injury does not need a long recovery.”

Forest Park hosts Stephenson on Friday.
