Hockey: Loukus line leads Calumet over Kingsford

IRON MOUNTAIN — It was the Loukus Plague that did Kingsford in on Thursday.

Calumet’s Loukus line composed of brothers Brent and Dean, along with cousin Scott, combined for 13 points including five goals. Scott and Brent had two goals apiece in the Copper Kings’ 6-2 win..

“I thought we generated a lot offensively,” Calumet head coach Dan Giachino said. “When we attack with speed we created scoring chances. I would’ve liked to have seen us score a little bit more especially early on in the game. I thought their goaltender played a very good hockey game.”

The Copper Kings (16-6) controlled the puck for much of the game and peppered Kingsford goalie Trevor Anderson with 39 shots with 14 apiece in the first and third periods.

Kingsford seemed to tilt the game in its favor with a desperation glove save by Trevor Anderson on a two-on-one break. The Flivvers notched a goal by Carter Kreski with 45 seconds left in the period, assisted by Jack Perpich and Eamonn Weed. But Calumet answered on an unassisted goal by Scott Loukus with three seconds remaining.

Kingsford (8-10), with scarce practice time lately because of weather, were sluggish through chunks of the game.

“The kids played hard. Effort level was great,” Kingsford head coach Greg Wadge said. “We had some trouble defensively again clearing the zone. Overall I thought the kids played hard. That goal at the end of the second period was a big one and one that I would like that. Other than that I thought the kids played hard.”

The lack of practice time has been another blip on a hectic 2019 so far for the Flivvers, who have undergone a coaching change and, because of the schedule and recent cancellations, played in Mountain View Ice Arena for the first time since a Jan. 8 game against Hancock. It’ll only get more hectic as the Flivvers have five games in the next week including Thursday’s Calumet game.

“With canceled games it’s hard to get some continuity going,” Wadge said, noting the team has had maybe five practices in the last two weeks. “Even practice-wise those have been canceled too.”

Anderson made 33 saves for Kingsford. Calumet goaltender Sam Kiiskila made 18 saves on 20 shots.

Kingsford went 0 for 4 on the power play.

The Flivvers managed 20 shots on goal, with the majority coming from the low slot area. Their first goal about halfway through the first period by Jackson Andrews came off a turnover a couple feet in front of Kiiskila’s goal crease.

Giachino said Thursday was his team’s worst defensive effort all year.

“Just not mentally engaged tonight,” he said. “We were very lackadaiscal. We got beat way too many one-on-one situations. We gave up way too many shots. Just not very happy with our defensive effort.”

Kingsford visits Houghton in a rescheduled game on Saturday, while Calumet hosts Escanaba.
