ScuttleBu(r)t: IM’s Tommy, Mooch dare to be different

ScuttleBu(r)t

ScuttleBu(r)t …

Those wacky Iron Mountain buddies at it again.

Michigan State Coach Tommy Izzo was skiing across Spartan Stadium for an ESPN bit Saturday while Steve Mariucci of the NFL Network teamed up with Michael Irvin on a rap video.

During ESPN’s “94 Feet,” college basketball analyst Jay Bilas asked Tommy about UP weather during the snow-covered day in East Lansing.

“This is a normal day (for the UP), maybe a May or June day,” quipped Tommy.

The toughest or worst chore for Izzo, who worked for the family business as a kid?

“Hang from the fourth story of a hotel and put on a shutter.”

Mariucci was again part of the NFL Network’s multi-hour Super Bowl coverage on Sunday morning. Mooch went by “DJ Mooch, Producer of Rappers” in the Atlanta recording studio with Irvin …

UP Sports Hall of Fame tickets are available from Iron Mountain’s Mike Caruso. Kingsford football coach Chris Hofer and North Dickinson basketball star Todd Lindeman are among the inductees.

Banquet takes place May 11 at the Island Resort & Casino. Those interested in tickets ($30) can contact Caruso at 774-1918 …

Breitung Township’s Lenita Erickson, who knows something about singing the national anthem at big-time sports venues, was “absolutely blown away” by Gladys Knight at the Super Bowl.

Lenita called it “one of the greatest national anthems that’s ever touched my heart.”

Lenita has sung the national anthem at Wrigley Field and other locations.

I’m still waiting to read Guy Evans’ “Nitro: The Incredible Rise and Incredible Collapse of Ted Turner’s WCW” where there’s a chapter dedicated to Lenita.

“I thought it was so accurate,” Lenita said of the “Lenita, Lenita” chapter and pages that followed.

Lenita, who did mike work for the wrestling show, may be the subject of her own book. May not be book-worthy but the fun-loving Lenita once spent a couple days in Vegas with yours truly and D.Roy. But as they say, “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

Another obstacle for rescheduling high school basketball games is a rule limiting teams to three games per week.

Understand one athletic director hoped to play four games and asked the MHSAA for an exception but was shot down …

There’s a proposal for a new MONLPC football league involving the Niagara/Goodman/Pembine co-op.

The Northern Elite Predators — with an enrollment of 235 — will take on 11-man teams like Northland Pines (Eagle River, 389), Tomahawk (377), Bonduel (309), Crandon (247), Coleman (214) and Crivitz (202). This alignment needs WIAA approval.

Elcho/White Lake, Marion/Tigerton, Suring, Three Lakes and Wabeno/Laona — all part of the Predators’ 2018 schedule — are moving to eight-player football with Florence …

From Phil Rosenthal, Chicago Tribune: “Amid all the praise for Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman, shouldn’t there have been at least a mention of his four-game suspension this season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances?”
