Iron Mountain’s expected and Forest Park’s unexpected, by most pundits, boys basketball regional tournament appearances start Tuesday.

The Mountaineers (23-0), No. 1 in the UP Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association poll, meet Negaunee (15-7) at 5 p.m. (Central time) at Marquette High School.

The Mountaineers, led by West PAC Player of the Year Foster Wonders and school scoring leader Marcus Johnson, swept Negaunee twice during the regular season. The Miners have won nine of their last 10 games.

“They’re going to be ready,” said IM Coach Bucky Johnson. “They’re well coached and they have some talented players.”

The other half of the bracket has Traverse City St. Francis (17-3) meeting Charlevoix (13-9) at East Jordan. TCSF upset fourth-ranked Glen Lake 59-44 and Charlevoix won its first district in 10 years to reach the regional.

Back row: assistant coach Robin Marttila, assistant coach Brian Waitrovich, Christian Tregillis, Teagan Erickson, Jake Dumais, Foster Wonders, Tony Feira, Bryce Pietrantonio, Jurgen Kleiman, Jaden Vicenzi, Charlie Gerhard, head coach Bucky Johnson, assistant coach Rick Olds and statistician Santino Carollo.

Glen Lake ousted IM in last year’s state quarterfinals.

“We’re taking it one game at a time like we’ve said all year,” coach Johnson said. “This was the game in our sights. People are saying this team won, that team won, blah blah blah. We have to take care of our own business. We have to stay focused on our next opponent.”

The Division 3 Region 17 final will be played Thursday at Sault Ste. Marie. Quarterfinal is March 12 in Petoskey.

Forest Park (11-11) is the only team without a winning record in the Division 4 Region 25 tournament at Negaunee.

The Trojans swamped rival North Dickinson and held off North Central to win District 99. Jets coach Mike Malone wasn’t surprised to see Coach Chris Nocerini’s Trojans advance.

The Trojans (11-11) will open regional play Tuesday against Bessemer. The Trojans, front row, from left: managers Eli Brzoznowski and Ethan Willman, Max Nylund, CJ Post, Sean Caron, Daniel Franz, Riley Hendrickson, Keall Emmers and manager Payton Woollard. Back row: assistant coach Chad Martin, Tim Bendick, Tommy Peltoma, Tommy Showers, Jacob Peterson, Gavin Johnson, Gabe Scarlassara, head coach Chris Nocerini and assistant coach Marcus Celello.

“Nocerini is just so good at preparing for what they do,” Malone said. “He doesn’t even have to watch film. His guys just play their tails off for him.

“They play disciplined, fundamental, sound man-to-man defense and they played really well in that zone (Friday) when they switched it back and forth.

“Offensively, they have one or two sets but beyond that they know how to play the game of basketball really well.”

Forest Park and Bessemer (16-4), making its first regional appearance since 2004, square off at 7 p.m. (Central time). The opening regional test at 5 p.m. pits Dollar Bay (18-4) and Munising (15-4).

The winners meet Wednesday in Negaunee, with the quarterfinal set for March 12 in Escanaba.

A shot in the final seconds from senior Uriah Aili lifted Bessemer past Ewen-Trout Creek 51-50 in the District 97 final.

“What a game,” said Bessemer coach Richard Matrella. “That’s what high school basketball is all about.”

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Blue Bolts captured a third straight district by downing Hancock 45-29. Blue Bolts coach Jesse Kentala quoted former Bays coach and Norway grad Jim Bronczyk after winning the district.

“JB always said to enjoy every (district) win because you never know when the next one is coming,” said Kentala.
