Baseball: Pitching leads Norway in sweep of Stephenson
NORWAY — Norway swept Stephenson with a pair of 4-0 wins on Tuesday.
The Knights (16-4) were helped by a gem in the nightcap by pitcher Gannon Bray, who nearly tossed a perfect game. But Stephenson spoiled the achievement with a seventh-inning leadoff single.
Bray struck out five and walked one while giving up two hits.
Bray was helped with a two-run single by Trevor Anderson in the third and then a two-run home run by Kody Hendricks.
In the first game, Payton Thompson also turned in a gem on the mound. He gave up three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in a complete game.
Thompson and Bret Turini had back-to-back RBI singles in the first inning. Nolan Amundson had two RBIs. Turini had three hits including a double.
The Knights’ next game is Tuesday, May 28 when they host North Central. A ceremony before the game will designate the field as Mike Maule Field, named after Norway’s longtime assistant coach.
