Golf: Mountaineers medalists at MPC meet

CHAMPION — The Negaunee High School golf team will be riding high into next week’s UP Division 1 finals after taking both the boys and girls team crowns at the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet at Wawonowin Country Club on Thursday.

The Miners boys compiled a team score of 354 followed by Westwood with 381, Iron Mountain with 393 and Manistique with 400.

The girls topped Iron Mountain with a score of 44 to the Mountaineers’ 459. Westwood followed with 492 while Manistique returned to the clubhouse with a 502.

The top scores of the day went to two Iron Mountain players, Ricky Brown and Anna Pirkola. Brown shot an 82 on the par 72 course to lead the boys medalists while Pirkola returned with a 95 to lead the girls.

Westwood’s Tyler Annala earned runner-up on the boys side shooting an 83 while Iron Mountain’s Marcus Johnson completed the podium with an 84.

Negaunee finished with four medalists on the boys side including Avery Hopper and Jackson Gladwell. The teammates tied for fourth, each shooting an 85.

Following them in a three-way tie for sixth with scores of 92 were Negaunee’s Luke Stenfors, Westwood’s Colin Bjorne and Negaunee’s Nolan Corwin.

Jerry Jack of Manistique took ninth with a 93 while Nick Opolka of Iron Mountain claimed the final medalist spot shooting a 96.

Following Pirkola on the girls side was Rylee Ring shooting a 102 for the Miners. Pirkola’s teammate Jenna Santini completed the podium in third with a 104, followed by Negaunee’s Brylea Ranta in fourth with a 105.

Negaunee’s final girls medalist was Marissa Neveau in fifth shooting a 111. The Patriots had two girls medalists, Laci Moffatt who shot a 118 for seventh place while teammate Haley Mattila finished with a 120 good for eighth.

Manistique’s top girls finisher was Sydnee MacPhail, shooting a 113 for sixth place.

Negaunee, Westwood and Iron Mountain compete in the UP Division 1 finals on Wednesday, with the boys competing at the Escanaba Country Club and the girls competing at Sweetgrass Golf Club.

Manistique competes in the Divison 2 finals on Thursday at George Young Golf Club in Iron River.
