Tom Wender’s Yooper Football Camp returns Monday, June 10, and June 11 at Kingsford High School. Wender, a state-title winning coach at Iron Mountain and former college assistant, offers the camp for athletes in grades 7-12.

Quarterbacks, receivers and centers will get expert attention from the likes of Jim Kiernan, who teamed with Iron Mountain’s Randy Awrey to develop Packers coach Matt LaFleur into a top-notch quarterback at Saginaw Valley, and Michigan Tech line coach Jace Daniels, an Escanaba native who has experience in the NFL and CFL.

The enthusiastic Wender will assisted by his buddy and fellow UP Hall of Famer Terry Duval, who’s worth the $75 camp fee all by himself for his insight into youth sports and life.

Thank you Bryan Bartlett Starr for giving me and so many other Packer backers such great memories. I was fortunate to be there for the “Ice Bowl” when Starr plunged home for the winning touchdown.

I also nearly beaned Bart Starr during a golf event in Green Bay. When the Packers used to host the media for golf and dinner, yours truly played 18 holes with Leader Waitrovich. One of my tee shots whistled over the head of coach Starr. I believe that was the first time Bart Starr ever delivered a discouraging word.

Bart Starr, who died Sunday at age 85, was described by Brett Favre as “kind, thoughtful and classiest person you could ever know.”

That says it all …

I’m off to Minnesota for the fourth time in a month, and I wish it was a Grain Belt run. Not sure if I will be back for the “longest day in sports” (UP Track Finals) or any of summer’s major events.

I do have incentive to return. I’ve got four pages of notes for a Bob Madigan story that needs to be written ..
