Softball: Florence ousts Wausaukee, advances to sectional title game

One win from first-ever state tourney appearance

FLORENCE, Wis. — Florence downed Wausaukee 6-2 in a WIAA Division 5 sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

Florence advances to the sectional championship at 5 p.m. CDT Thursday against Tri-County at Wausau East High School in Wausau, Wisconsin.

A win Thursday would make it Florence’s first-ever softball appearance in the state tournament.

The Bobcats (17-5) were led by Sidney Tomczak’s complete game on the mound. She gave up the two runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

“The girls are playing very well right now,” Florence head coach Dan Robinson said. “Last night we weren’t as good as we were in previous games. We were kind of wore down a little bit but we played hard. They kept pushing it and pushing it.”

Lacey Enders and Jordyn Springer had two hits apiece. Springer doubled. Madison Neuens, Kathleen Selden, Jenna Springer and Tomczak singled.

Wausaukee loaded the bases in the sixth. The Rangers managed a run before Florence escaped the inning with a double play and a flyout.

“That was a big inning for us to get out of. Our innings we were aggressive on the bases and that puts a lot of pressure on teams,” Robinson said. “We got them throwing the ball around and got in position to score. We did a good job all around last night. Just a little more sluggish than we’re normally used to.”
