Softball: Grand slam lifts IM to split with Norway

NORWAY – Iron Mountain and Norway battled to a doubleheader split on Thursday.

Iron Mountain won the first game 17-8 and Norway won the nightcap 12-2.

The Mountaineers’ (13-7) night was punctuated by a grand slam home run by Saylor Swartout in the sixth inning of the first game. Iron Mountain rallied with seven runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 17-8.

Emma Thomann had a two-run double for the Mountaineers in the sixth. Anna Rittenhouse had an RBI single.

Claire Mongrain had two RBIs and Annslee Runsat had an RBI. Jorden Stoner had a two RBI-double in the third.

Norway (9-9) scored all its runs in the fourth inning on five hits. Holly Mattia, Mariah Gyselinck, Allie Sheski and Averie Popp had RBIs.

Gyselinck pitched for Norway and gave up 19 hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Mongrain pitched for Iron Mountain and gave up six hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Norway jumped out to 10-1 lead after an eight-run second inning in the nightcap.

The Knights were led with a two-run single by Popp. Haley Clifford had an RBI single. Karli Stanchina drew a bases-loaded walk. Mattia had an RBI groundout.

Iron Mountain scored its runs in the first and fourth innings. Stoner had a sacrifice fly and Hannah Proudfit had an RBI single.

Stanchina pitched for Norway and gave up four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Runsat, Mongrain and Proudfit pitched for Iron Mountain. They gave up a 12 runs (five earned) on four hits with seven walks and two strikeouts.

Iron Mountain plays in the West PAC tournament today in Calumet.
