Track and field: Ishpeming holds off Norway for Division 2 regional title

IRON RIVER — Ishpeming held off Mitchell LeGrave and Norway for the boys title while Hancock edged West Iron County for girls honors Thursday in the MHSAA Division 2 regional track and field meet at Nelson Field.

Ishpeming’s boys tallied 65 points in beating Norway 52.5, Ironwood 33, L’Anse 21, Hancock 9.5 and West Iron County 6. LeGrave led the Knights with four firsts in the 100, 200, long jump and 400 relay.

Isaac Hautamaki, Ethan Sabotta and Jeff VanHolla joined LeGrave on the 400 relay. The Knights had two other firsts from Evan Grosskopf in 110-meter hurdles and David Loomis in pole vault.

Jonah Broberg paced the Hematites with firsts in 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Logan Kruhlik had firsts in the shot and discus.

Hancock’s girls posted 49.5 points to best WIC 45, Ishpeming 44, L’Anse 24, Ironwood 12 and Norway 8.5.

Bulldogs’ Kalli Chynoweth figured in three firsts, winning the 800-meter run and participating in the 1600 relay and 3200 relay.

Kyra Sipe of L’Anse won the 100 and 200-meter dashes. West Iron’s Jordan Shamion swept the 100 and 300 hurdles.

WIC tacked on two more firsts from Zoe Kolenda in 3200 run and Emily Nelson in shot put. Norway’s Khalajia Hannah won the 400-meter dash.

Top four places in each event advance to the UP Finals on Saturday, June 1, at Kingsford.
