Baseball: Mavericks defeat Channing in battle of champs

CHANNING — In a battle of Superiorland Baseball League champions from the past two seasons, the Marquette County Mavericks wriggled out of a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh inning to win at Channing 4-3 on Monday evening.

The Mavericks (2-0) have won the playoff championship in each of the first two years of the league, while Channing (1-1) has won the regular season in both of those seasons.

In other games Monday, the Negaunee Blasters eased past Blagec Heating of Iron Mountain 7-5, while Coldwell Banker-Craig Heinonen got past State Farm-Jill Leonard 6-4.

Mavericks 4, Channing 3

Aaron “Goose” Adriano and Hunter Larson led the Mavs’ offense, Adriano posting three hits and three RBIs and Larson going 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored.

The host Railroaders were led by Tyler Miller having a 3-for-3 night with a double, run scored and walk.

Jacob Adriano got the save for Marquette County, pitching two innings of no-hit ball. Starters Steve Hintsala of the Mavs and Kyle Sexton of Channing each worked five innings with no runs scored in the first three.

The scoring began in the fourth when Larson doubled and later scored, while in the fifth, James Larsen II and Larson scored on a Goose Adriano single to make it 3-0.

But the Railroaders tied it in their half of the fifth on runs scored by Sexton, Miller and Lane Holsworth.

The Mavericks retook the lead in the top of the seventh when Jacob Adriano led off with a walk, moved to second on Larsen’s sacrifice and scored when Adriano’s big brother Goose Adriano got his third RBI with two outs.

The eventual winners made the one-run lead stand up in the bottom of the seventh after Channing’s Luke Holsworth hit a one-out single, which was followed by an error and intentional walk to Miller to load the bases.

The game came down to one last dramatic sequence when Mavs’ second baseman C.J. Lepisto tagged out Miller going to second on a bases-loaded ground ball up the middle.

Blasters 7, Blagec 5

At Negaunee, Ryan Syrjala hit a two-run double in the sixth to put Negaunee (1-1) up for good and make a winner of Blasters pitcher James Bender, who threw a complete game.

Blagec falls to 0-2 as other details weren’t available.

Coldwell 6, State Farm 4

Coldwell Banker-Craig Heinonen improved to 2-0 after making several comebacks, the final one by scoring two runs in the seventh that broke a 4-4 tie.

Starter Steve Daavettila and reliever Gabe Daavettila combined on the mound for the winners, Steve scattering three hits and a walk while striking out three in three innings. Gabe allowed two runs while walking one and fanning two in his four innings.

Shane Johnson pitched a complete game for State Farm-Jill Leonard (0-2), allowing just five hits as he walked nine and struck out 10. That included striking out the side in the first inning.

Johnston also opened the scoring after he reached on an error and scored on a Mike Hanold single.

CBCH made its first comeback when Brian Pietila and Gabe Daavettila scored in the third on a Steve Daavettila double to deep center.

State Farm’s Zac Sorelle tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of third with a solo homer, then went up 4-3 in the fourth.

Coldwell retied it in the fifth before its final comeback netted the win.
