Norway in baseball regional final Saturday
NORWAY — A Norway softball nemesis will meet the Knights in an MHSAA Division 4 regional final Saturday at East Jordan.
Norway (21-4-1) and Indian River Inland Lakes, which beat the Knights twice in three state softball tournament tests, will meet at 9 a.m. (Central time) Saturday in the first of two regional finals.
Gaylord St. Mary (24-5), ranked seventh in the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, will meet Johannesburg-Lewiston in the second regional final.
Regional final winners will meet Saturday afternoon in the super regional. State semifinals and finals are scheduled for June 14 at Michigan State University.
A four-run first-inning sent Norway past Gogebic 6-2 in the regional semifinals Wednesday.
“We knew Norway was probably the best team in the regional because their pitching is really good,” said Gogebic assistant Alex Metas. “We thought if we could win today, we could win on Saturday and win the regional.”
Indian River Inland Lakes ousted Pickford 8-2 in the regional semifinals.
Johannesburg-Lewiston defeated eight-time district champion Maple City Glen Lake 5-3. Two Gaylord St. Mary pitchers flipped a two-hitter as the Snowbirds blanked Central Lake 9-0.
Johannesburg-Lewiston and St. Mary are cross-county rivals.
